A screening test is a procedure or test that is done to see if a woman or her baby might have certain problems. There are several screening tests performed during pregnancy like Downs syndrome screening, preeclampsia screening etc., Counselling can help you understand better why theses tests are performed and what are the implications if the screening test is positive.
Some women may test positive in the screening test. Counselling helps you understand what it means for you and the baby. You will also be explained about the options available for you to get the best outcome for you and the baby.
Fetal anomaly or birth defect is a genetic or physical defect in the fetus that can affect the pregnancy, childbirth and have serious effects on health of the fetus. Fetal anomaly can appear at any time during the pregnancy and some of the anomalies may not be detected in the antenatal scans. Some birth defects may be mild and some may be severe. Having a fetal anomaly detected is an emotional experience for the parents. Counselling regarding the anomaly, its severity and implications for the baby can help parents understand the condition, seek further help and make informed choices.
In the womb, the fetus is supplied with nutrients and oxygen by the placenta. In some pregnancies, this supply can get affected and babies may not grow up to their potential. Such babies need frequent monitoring and sometimes may need early delivery. Counselling helps parents understand the the growth problems in the baby, the need for regular follow-up and timely delivery.
